Stephen E. Brown has served as vice president for university advancement at Lawrence Technological University since January 2, 2007.
From 2001 to 2006 Brown had served as associate vice president for marketing and communications at Wayne State University. From 1994 to 2001, he was president of the Houston/Detroit offices of J. Walter Thompson (JWT) and prior to that held positions of growing authority at JWT and earlier with such firms as Ogilvy & Mather, Leo Burnett, and what is now Saatchi & Saatchi. The dozens of accounts he provided leadership to include Kellogg’s, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Campbell’s Soup and Goodyear, to name a few.
Brown’s board positions include the Adcraft Club of Detroit and the Detroit Schools Promise Program. He is a past board member of the Outward Bound Wilderness School and the Metro Toronto Epilepsy Association.
He is a graduate of the Strategic Management Program at Harvard University and has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto.
Lawrence Tech is in the early stages of preparing for a $75 million campaign aimed primarily at increasing scholarship support and university endowment funds.
On June 30, 2006, Lawrence Tech concluded a $46 million capital campaign that more than doubled its initial $20 million goal, and resulted in a major transformation of the University’s 125-acre campus. Campaign successes included the $14.9 million A. Alfred Taubman Student Services Center, the Center for Innovative Materials Research, and an extensively redeveloped and environmentally friendly and innovative campus quadrangle, all opening in 2006. A $20 million University Technology and Learning Center opened in 2001, and a $12 million University Housing Center opened in 2003. The campaign also attracted applied research agreements that resulted in federal and state partnerships unprecedented for a private Michigan university.
Among a host of related honors, in 2003, Lawrence Tech was one of just 17 of the nation’s 3,200 colleges and universities to win a Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)/Wealth ID award for exemplary development operations and overall improvement in fund raising over the past three years. A CASE silver Circle of Excellence Award was presented to Lawrence Tech in 2005 for the University’s TechUpdate advertising series.
