Wanda Barnes, a receptionist for Lawrence Tech’s Office of Admission was presented the Mary Ann Marcum Customer Service Award for the spring semester along with a $1,000 honorarium at a May 15 reception in the Buell Management Building.

The award is presented biannually to LTU employees of any job classification who “go above and beyond” to provide their customers (including co-workers) with quality service and assistance. These exemplary employees are consistently responsive to questions, promptly return phone calls, make special efforts to fill requests, and are helpful and courteous.

The award was established by Frank Marcum, a graduate of the Detroit Institute of Technology, in memory of his late wife, who held several management positions at LTU until she was killed in an automobile accident. The award program provides a $1,000 prize, a desktop plaque, and formal recognition on a permanent plaque in the Buell Management Building.

Twice a year faculty and staff nominate co-workers. The winner is selected by a panel of past award winners.

Barnes arrived at LTU in 2000 as a temporary employee in Admissions. Her managers were so impressed with her enthusiasm, work ethic, and friendly demeanor that they quickly made her full time in 2001.

“Wanda wears many hats at the front desk in Admissions. Her job duties are numerous and demanding, but even on the busiest of days, she does not let that get in the way of providing outstanding service to prospective Lawrence Tech students,” a co-worker wrote.

Other co-workers noted that Barnes is always willing to assist anyone asking for help. “Wanda is pleasant and courteous to all individuals, and is great at building relationships with people. She treats visitors with a warm manner that one would expect at a favorite aunt’s house,” another co-worker noted.

A native of Detroit, Barnes graduated from McKenzie High School. She then attended Oakland Community College, where she majored in business management.
