Geotechnical Aspects of Landfills:

  • Settlement mechanics of bioreactor landfills: Mathematical modeling and field investigation of settlement behavior.
  • Geotechnical properties of municipal solid waste (MSW): Investigating the variation of geotechnical properties of MSW with age and moisture.

Properties and Behavior of Soils:

  • Scouring at bridge piers: Field and laboratory investigation of scour at bridge piers in the state of Michigan to calibrate scour predicting methodologies to Michigan specific conditions.
  • Shear strength properties of soils: Development of an energy balance approach to estimate shear strength properties using SPT blow counts.

Research Involvement

  • Variation of shear strength properties of MSW with organic fraction, Seed Research Grant, Lawrence Technological University (2009–2010, total budget $3,000).
  • Co-PI for the 3-year (2007-2010) research project project “A Critical Evaluation of Bridge Scour for Michigan Specific Conditions,” Funded by Michigan DOT. PIs: Drs. Carpenter (LTU) and Miller (Wayne State University), Total project value $ 285,000, LTU share $166,000.
  • Mechanics of Biocell Landfill Settlements, Doctoral Research, New Jersey Institute of Technology, 2002-2005. A comprehensive numerical model was developed to predict the settlement behavior, moisture distribution, and gas pressures in a bioreactor landfill.
  • Junior investigator (2004-2005) for the NSF funded project titled “U.S. -Egypt Cooperative Research: Management of Environmental Problems in Egypt,” funded by National Science Foundation (NSF Award # 0405900).
  • Research Assistant for the project funded by US Department of Transportation/New Jersey Department of Transportation, "Correlation of Surface Texture, Segregation, and Measurement of Air Voids," January 2001- August 2002.

  •  Sustainable Landfill Technology Project: development and implementation of anaerobic/aerobic biocells and subsequent mining for resource recovery, undertaken in collaboration with the City of Calgary, and involves a number of components; focusing on development of new techniques and technologies for application of sustainable landfills in Canada and internationally, University of Calgary, Canada, 2002 to 2005.
  • Methanotrophic Biofiltration (MBF): Design of pilot scale methontrophic biofilters, Development and field application of passive and active aeration biofilters consisting of media capable of supporting optimal growth of methanotrophic bacteria, undertaken in collaboration with several oil and gas companies and industry organizations, University of Calgary, Canada, May-August 2004 and May – August 2003.
  • Numerical Analysis of transient heat flow coupled with groundwater flow, Research project for Master of Engineering thesis, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, 2000 -2001.
