Engineering technologists use the principles of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve problems in research, product development, manufacturing, marketing, technical sales, service, and maintenance. Their role is vital, and as society becomes ever more dependent upon technology, the need for those experienced in engineering technology will also increase. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor expects overall employment in the engineering technology field to grow, and graduates have a wide variety of career options.

Engineering technologists often work with engineers and scientists, especially in research and product development, building or setting up equipment, preparing and conducting experiments, analyzing results, or making prototype versions of newly designed equipment. Others work in quality control – inspecting products and processes, performing tests, and collecting data. In manufacturing, they may assist in product design, development, or production. In many cases, it is the technologist who takes ideas and turns them into reality.

The roles of engineering technologists are critical. They must be able to produce practical and workable results, install and operate technical systems, devise hardware from concepts, develop and produce products, service machines and systems, manage construction and production processes, and provide sales support for technical products and systems.

Engineering technologists also may choose to move away from strictly technical responsibilities and become more involved in technical management, sales, marketing, or other support areas.

bs-engineering-technology1.jpgThe Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology program is designed both for individuals who already hold an associate degree in engineering technology from other institutions and for those who are concurrently completing their associate degree at Lawrence Technological University. Students can attend full-time or part-time and choose from four areas of specialization: communications engineering technology, construction engineering technology, manufacturingengineeringtechnology, and mechanical engineering technology. All technical courses are taught on weekday evenings, with other courses available during the day.

Lawrence Tech’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree adds a broader technical base to the highly specialized associate degree programs, allowing graduates to exercise a higher level of technical responsibility. The program also emphasizes the administrative skills required for most technical supervisory roles and is thus especially useful to upwardly mobile technicians who are preparing for new career opportunities.
