LTU’s Master of Science in Automotive Engineering is designed not only to develop your skills as an engineer, but also to help you gain a mastery of the entire vehicle. The program focuses on the automobile as a single system in which all components and component packages are sub-systems that cannot be altered without affecting the entire automobile. From strategic planning, design, and product engineering to manufacturing and engineering management, the Master of Science in Automotive Engineering can prepare you with the leadership skills needed to advance your career.


Geared toward graduates of accredited undergraduate mechanical or electrical engineering programs, this degree was developed to meet the needs of working professionals. Classes are conveniently offered in the evenings and the program can be completed in approximately two years. You also can choose between a coursework-only option or a thesis option, which consists of coursework and a thesis.

The University’s unique 4 x 4 vehicle chassis dynamometer allows you to study vehicle performance, safety, sustainability, and fuel economy.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master of Science in Automotive Engineering program requires the demonstration of high potential for success based on the following:

  1. Submission of the Application for Graduate Admission;
  2. A bachelor of science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited (or equivalent) university (minimum GPA of 3.0);
  3. Official transcripts of all completed college work;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. A resume, including professional experiences and extracurricular activities.

Applicants who do not meet all of the conditions for regular graduate admission may be considered for provisional admission by the Graduate Admissions Committee, provided they demonstrate an exceptionally high aptitude and promise for doing graduate work in this area and hold a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Applicants may be required to take the GRE examination and pass the TOEFL examination.

Additionally, the academic background of candidates will be evaluated by the Graduate Admissions Committee as part of the admissions process. Students found deficient in a particular subject area are required to enroll in pre-core crossover courses before being allowed to enroll in some of the core program courses. No graduate credit will be granted for these courses.
