Lawrence Technological University has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities for curriculum development to increase diversity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The university was one of 20 universities and colleges nationwide, and the only one in Michigan, to receive the three-year grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) initiative Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM (TIDES).

 The initiative will support curriculum and faculty development activities to develop models for broader institutional change for the advancement of evidence-based and culturally competent teaching in STEM, particularly in the computer and information science domains.

 “It is critically important for higher education to find ways to increase success in STEM fields for both women and all students from underserved communities,” said AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider, in a release.

University officials state the grant will fund the initiative “to support curriculum and faculty development activities to develop models for broader institutional change for the advancement of evidence-based and culturally competent teaching in STEM, particularly in the computer and information science domains.”

Over the course of the three-year grant, Lawrence Tech will:

  • Provide STEM faculty with opportunities to become proficient in incorporating culturally sensitive pedagogies into STEM courses.
  • Develop interdisciplinary courses that include the computer/information science disciplines.
  • Engage in course implementation that is grounded in evidence-based pedagogies that are culturally sensitive.

Requirements

General Scholarship Requirements for All Applicants:
At the time of application each S-STEM applicant at LTU* must:

  • Be United States citizens, Nationals refugee aliens, or permanent residents at the time of application;
  • Enroll full time at LTU (12 credits, with at least 9 credits at LTU during the award period);
  • Demonstrate financial need by following the Department of Education guidelines;
  • Demonstrate leadership and academic potential;
  • Major in one of the four STEM programs, and
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or above. core course GPA higher than 3.2, ranking in top 30%
  • Commit to meeting regularly with co-PI/advisor and participating in S-STEM activities
  • Agree to respond to surveys to determine employment or student status following graduation

           * Will discuss with the scholarship collaborator on MCCC scholars criteria.

 Required documentation list:

  • Completed NSF S-STEM scholarship application
  • Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation (one should be from a college professor or counselor at MCCC; one from a LTU professor and another can be from a community member or employer who can address your skills)
  • Personal statement addressing your educational and career goals which is an opportunity to let the scholarship committee know them more personally.

An additional requirement will be that these students are (1) completing two-year degrees in one of the industrial technology programs at Monroe County Community College (MCCC) :  Nuclear Engineering Technology (NET), Electronic and Computer Technology (ECT), Industrial Electricity/Electronic Technology (IET), Machine Manufacturing Technology (MMT), and Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET); or (2) are S-STEM scholars who have completed one of the above technology programs and who chose to transfer into Lawrence Technological University (LTU) four-year electrical and computer engineering (ECE) programs to seek a B.S. These students will receive scholarships from the second year of pre-engineering program at MCCC to the fourth year of the LTU program.

Selection Process: Students will apply for S-STEM scholarships by first completing a FAFSA and then LTU’s standard scholarship application which is used for all scholarships distributed through LTU’s Financial Aid Office. These forms will be made available at financial aid and student support services offices on all campuses and in area high schools and targeted community organizations. The application that students will use to apply for S-STEM scholarships consists of four sections: personal and educational information, financial information, a one-page personal statement that addresses educational and career goals, and three letters of recommendation.

Scholarship Renewal: Scholarships will be renewed each term, provided that students continue to meet all eligibility requirements and demonstrate progress towards graduation. Scholarship award are available for the second year pre-engineering of MCCC students and five additional semesters for students continuing their education at LTU.

Reallocation Procedure: Regular monthly meetings between co-PIs and each S-STEM scholar will make it possible to identify and avoid any difficulties by ensuring that students receive the support they need. Student hardship will also be considered as a part of this decision and a deferral of scholarship funds may be offered, if justified. If at the end of any term, a student does not meet the criteria listed above, the remainder of the scholarship will be forfeited. The remaining money will then go to the next-ranked applicant who did not receive a scholarship.

News and Events

    • LTU President Moudgil and Present Quartey met together on Sep 3, 2014 at MCCC. Through this granted NSF award ($600,000), a creative "MCCC+LTU+DTE" education model has been proposed and "2+2" MCCC-LTU joint program has been discussed.

      Monroe High School students will be enrolled in MCCC for the first 2 years and then transfer to LTU for another 2 years.  LTU S-STEM grant would support 5-10 students (up to $3500/year/student, $20,000/year in total) during the first 2 years at MCCC. After they transfer to LTU, the scholarship is up to $10,000/year for each student. Overall, they are able to receive totally 4 years' scholarship based on financial need.

      When receiving the scholarship, MCCC awardees sign an agreement to transfer to LTU after graduation. A small group LTU-MCCC follow-up meeting will be held at LTU in the beginning of this October.

    • Congratulations! Mr. Tyler M. Splan has been awarded the $10,000 NSF S-STEM scholarship at LTU. Mr. Splan is from the  Nuclear Engineering Technology program of Monroe County Community College (MCCC), and he plans to come to LTU this Fall.

 Department of Energy Summer Opportunities

 The S-STEM team at the NSF was just made aware of the following internship opportunity from the Department of Energy:

The Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to its 2015 Summer Term
internship/fellowship programs. These programs, which offer opportunities for direct engagement in scientific research and technology featuring specialized instrumentation; large-scale, multidisciplinary efforts; and/or scientific user facilities, are available for undergraduate students enrolled at community colleges and/or four-year institutions, and for visiting faculty. Selected students or faculty participate at one of 17 DOE Laboratories/Facilities, receive stipends, and may qualify for travel and housing assistance.

Applications for these competitive programs must be completed and submitted online by 5:00 PM ET on January 9, 2015(including all required application materials and recommendations). The 2015 Summer Term placements are for 10 weeks duration in a May to August timeframe. 

The three programs accepting applications are:

  • The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences, under the guidance of laboratory/facility staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.  More information about SULI and access to the online application is at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/suli/
  • The Community College Internship (CCI) program encourages community college students to enter technical careers relevant to the DOE mission by providing technical training experiences at the DOE Labs.  Students work on technologies or instrumentation projects or major research facilities related to ongoing R&D programs.   • The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce vital to the DOE mission areas.  In this program, selected university/college faculty members collaborate with DOE laboratory research staff on a research project of mutual interest. Faculty member participants may invite up to two students (one of which may be a graduate student) to participate in the research project. Applicants establish their collaborations with laboratory research staff in advance of applying and must submit a co-developed research proposal as part of the application. Students apply separately at the invitation of the faculty member. More information about the VFP and access to the online application is at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/vfp/.


The SULI, CCI and VFP programs are sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists.
