The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter at Lawrence Technological University is embarking on an adventure to Canada this coming year. This is our inaugural year entering the Canadian Society of Civil Engineer’s sponsored ‘Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race’ in London, Ontario, Canada. Since this competition started in 1974, it has been an exciting experience for engineering students to challenge and exhibit their knowledge and ingenuity outside of the classroom.
We are expanding out connections internationally and challenging our engineering skills by entering a competition that Lawrence Tech has never participated in previously. The entry requires the team to design and construct a safety superstructure, skis entirely composed of concrete, a steering system and braking system to safely transport five people down a snowy embankment.
The title of our team’s toboggan is “Made in Michigan” and the theme is Pure Michigan. To win the spirit category, we plan on dressing as Michigan sports teams, various Michigan universities, and sporting the colors red, white and blue.
