Prof. Merscher began teaching at LTU in 1968. His courses include calculus and engineering mathematics. He is the mathematics program coordinator.
Prof. Merscher served as Exam Committee Chair for the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition and has authored the LTU High School Math Competition since its inception. He has served on LTU's Faculty Senate, is the MAA campus liaison, and chaired the local arrangements committee for the MAA Michigan Section annual meeting. He was the recipient of LTU's Faculty Person of the Year Award in 2003. He was awarded the MAA DIstinguished Teaching Award for 2010.
His degrees include a BS in mathematics from Benedictine University (Ill.) and a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He has also received a NSF fellowship for further study at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill).
